Wisdom seeking before sunrise: Morning Owls

Looking around your friend circle, it's likely easy to find the Night Owl. Perhaps it's even you. You know the one who surges with energy and creativity in the dark hours of night. Could be any of us really.

Then there are others who thrive in the wee small hours of the morning while everyone else sleeps. They rise early to tend to first things first, to seek wisdom before sunrise that fuels the day, to follow in the footsteps of the Teacher of Teachers (Mark 1:35) in prayer and await daily mercies that are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).

They pray "Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days" like King David prayed in Psalm 90:14. They often carve time into a weekly jam-packed calendar for coffee, community, and encouragement before family responsibilities and office hours.

They are the Morning Owls.

There are 100+ Scripture passages that describe how "in the morning" is where it all begins. Here are a few of them:

  • Abraham sought obedience in Genesis 22:2–4
  • Jacob memorialized a dream/vision in Genesis 28:18
  • Joseph comforted Pharoah in Genesis 40:5–7
  • King David joyfully proclaims God's faithful love in Psalm 59:15-17
  • Jesus walked on water to be with His followers in Matthew 14:25
  • Mary Magdalene, Mother Mary, and Salome visited the tomb in Mark 16:2 and saw the resurrected Jesus face-to-face
  • Studious followers heard Jesus teach in the Temple in Luke 21:38

First things first sets the day's course.

That's the spirit of a men's group we're a part of, and that's the spirit of this exclusive design. Wisdom sought by Morning Owls (and over coffee for delicious style points).

P.S. With humorous wisdom, King Solomon also noted that "If one blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be counted as a curse to him (Proverbs 27:14), so.....

(yeah, that's a hoot – and you chuckled)
